CHAPTER TWELVE

Markos

I stare down at Star, and my heart plummets. She was going to try to hurt herself again, but this time with sleeping pills. Where the fuck did she get them? So far as I am aware, no one in this house is on them.

She lied to me. She lied about not meaning to take in the water. What was she planning on doing? Making love to me and then kill herself? Why?

Her eyes widen as she stares at me, but then her face tightens as her brows draw down. “You went through my bag? You don’t trust me.”

“With fucking good reason, it seems,” I snarl. “Why would you do this?”

“Do what?”

“Try to hurt yourself again.”

“They weren’t for me,” she says, voice small.

I think she’s telling the truth, which is somehow more disturbing because there’s enough here to put down a horse.

“What then? To harm us?”

Tears form in her gorgeous eyes, and I know I’ve hit the jackpot. “Fuck, Star, we took you in.”

I think I might cry too. I’ve just spent the most beautiful two hours with her I’ve had with any woman, and then she goes and does this.

I was falling for her, big time. It wasn’t merely sex for me, and now my heart feels as if she’s stomped on it and emptied an ashtray on it for good measure.

“Not to harm any of you. I only wanted to knock you out, well, not you, but whoever is here tomorrow guarding me. That way, I could go to my family and help them. I can’t sit here doing nothing when they might be killed. Don’t you understand, Markos? I knew you would never let me come, you’d all say no, so this way, no one gets hurt, and I get to be there. You understand, don’t you?”

No, I don’t fucking understand. This is where she and I part ways. She was abused by her parents, and she still wants to save them. She carries totally misplaced loyalty to them, and it pisses me off. How can she care about them when they trafficked her? How can she care for them, more than she cares for me and my brothers? We risked our fucking lives to save her, and we will do it all over again tomorrow to save her useless family and her neighbors.

“I don’t understand you,” I tell her.

“As if you wouldn’t do the same for your family,” she shoots back.

“Not for my birth family, no. Family is what you make it. Family is earned. You don’t get to be my family simply because you gave birth to me. I walked away from my parents and haven’t looked back. I don’t care if they are dead in a ditch.”

“Well, I do. My family didn’t abuse me like yours did.”

I don’t know why because I rarely lose my temper, but her words are a red rag to a bull. “Didn’t abuse you?” I sneer at her as the words fall from my mouth, even though part of me is saying shut the fuck up.
